My new book. For anyone who does any ministry and who might run into any disappointment!

Am I mistaken, or does the cover look like the Titanic?

Gary: Interesting story: the book had its start back in 2012. I was asked to give a conference to missionaries working in Spain. I wanted to address: How do we process disappointment in our ministries? It happened to be the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, and suddenly I had my theme. Since then, I have had a folder on my laptop called “Iceberg Project.” Over a decade I mulled over it, interviewed friends about how to apply the material, and watched it grow.

But you go to the Bible, correct?

Oh goodness, yes, we’re all about the Word of God, and Iceberg Ahead is no Hollywood movie! The main focus is a small segment of Paul’s second journey (Acts 16-17), from the night he got his Macedonian call to the time he had to leave the region due to the heavy opposition. We trace out a total of eleven “collisions” that Paul and his team experienced, shocks that we ourselves might face. We then go step by step through the Bible’s path to processing disappointment – before God, before others, and within our own minds. We use the New Living Translation for its immediacy and accessible language.

How is Iceberg Ahead! different from your other books?

Most of what I write is on a technical level; for example, my commentary on 1-2 Thessalonians for Zondervan is filled with Greek exegesis and historical background:

Compare that with the style of Iceberg Ahead!

But – didn’t you just publish another book?

Because my projects are driven by my schedule, I set my own pace and finish when I finish. So yes, Myths that We Christians Accept and Pass Along to Others was published earlier this year. Myths and Iceberg Ahead! just happened to come out about the same time!

Is there a “friend discount”?

Perhaps! If you are willing to write even a short review of Iceberg Ahead! or Myths on Amazon (just mark it from 1-5 stars and write a couple of sentences about it), email me at gsshogren@gmail.com, include your mailing address, and maybe we can get you a free copy.

Final Thought

I believe Iceberg Ahead! would be an excellent gift for your pastor, teacher, deacon, missionary, but really, anyone who serves God in any capacity. What began as a conference for missionaries is now broadened to apply to all of God’s workers.

Where to pick it up:

Iceberg Ahead! is on Amazon and Kindle. We offer both at the lowest price that the publisher allowed us; the paperbacks are inexpensive, and the Kindle editions are next to nothing! Also available in Spanish (¡Témpano por Delante!). Click on link:

Iceberg Ahead!, paperback from Amazon, also Kindle

I also invite people to check out Myths, where I analyze and (typically) debunk stories that have circulated for years (for example, that boys are born with one rib missing, because of Adam losing one; or that there is a giant computer in Belgium called The Beast that has assigned everyone a number that they will be marked with in the Tribulation).
